On July 15, 2025, in Mumbai, Maharashtra, Tesla, the world-famous electric car company led by Elon Musk, officially launched its operations in India. The company opened its first showroom in the upscale Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), one of Mumbai’s most premium areas. At the same event, Tesla also began taking bookings for its Model Y electric SUV, marking the company’s entry into the world’s third-largest automobile market.

The inauguration event was attended by prominent political figures, including Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who personally explored the new Tesla lineup. In a moment that drew media attention, Mr. Shinde was even seen driving a Tesla outside Vidhan Bhavan, symbolizing political support for sustainable mobility in India.

Bookings Open for Model Y in India:

  • Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) – starting at ₹60 lakh
  • Model Y Long Range All-Wheel Drive (AWD) – priced around ₹68–69 lakh

Tesla’s India Strategy:

Tesla may not start making cars in India soon because it already has extra production capacity in its factories around the world. So, in India, Tesla will focus on selling its cars to the high-end or luxury market, where it will compete with other premium car brands.

The affordable EV market in India is already being taken care of by Indian companies that are growing fast in the electric vehicle space. At the same time, Chinese EV makers are also entering the Indian market and giving Tesla tough competition globally with their lower prices.

Charging Infrastructure Plans:

Tesla has also revealed that it will gradually roll out its Supercharger network in India, beginning with Mumbai and New Delhi. With over 70,000+ Superchargers worldwide, Tesla drivers globally can add up to 267 km of range in just 15 minutes. In India, home charging will also be available, offering overnight full charges for daily city commutes.

Charging Made Easy:

You can charge your car and get up to 267 km in just 15 minutes at any of the 70,000+ Tesla Superchargers. You can also charge it at home at night, so it’s always ready to drive.

Challenges Tesla Faces in India

  • High Import Duties
The government adds big taxes on cars that come from outside India, so Tesla cars cost a lot more here.
  • No Local Manufacturing
Tesla has not yet established a manufacturing or assembly facility in India, which prevents it from getting lower taxes and support from the government.
  • Price-Sensitive Market
People in India care a lot about price. Tesla cars are expensive, so only rich or luxury buyers can afford them.
  • Weak Charging Infrastructure
Tesla will bring its own fast chargers, but right now India doesn’t have enough EV charging stations—especially outside big cities.
  • Policy Uncertainty
EV-related policies and incentives in India vary between states and lack long-term consistency, making planning and investment decisions more challenging for Tesla.
  • Tough Competition
Tesla faces stiff competition from local and global players such as Tata Motors, MG, BYD, and Hyundai, which offer more affordable, locally supported electric vehicles.
  • Limited Service Network
Tesla’s after-sales service network in India is minimal, raising concerns about maintenance, spare parts availability, and overall customer support.
