As per government reports, India now boasts 26,367 public EV charging stations, the rapid buildout of which showcases the advancement of India’s electric vehicle charging infrastructure. Growth of EV Charging Stations in India

Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari also verified the installation of these charging stations in reply to a question in the Lok Sabha. Karnataka leads with the most number of stations at 5,879, followed by Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, and Tamil Nadu, with 3,842, 2,113, 1,951, and 1,495 stations, respectively. The other states with well over a thousand include Kerala (1,288), Rajasthan (1,285), Gujarat (1,008), and Telangana (976), with Madhya Pradesh also crossing the mark at 942. To support the growth in electric vehicles, Haryana, West Bengal, Punjab, and Odisha have also set up a decent number of charging stations.

In terms of the northeastern states, Assam comes out on top with 311 stations, while offering up 54 to Tripura, 50 to Manipur, 44 to Arunachal Pradesh, 43 to Meghalaya, 36 to Nagaland, 13 to Mizoram, and 11 to Sikkim. Among the Union Territories, Jammu & Kashmir also tops the list with 157 stations, ahead of Puducherry (42), Chandigarh (14), and a few in Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Daman & Diu, Andaman & Nicobar, Ladakh, and Lakshadweep.

Government Initiatives and Future Plans

Like many other governments around the world, the Indian government is taking steps to ensure sustainable, eco-friendly growth. The steps include establishing an appropriate charging network, which has been made easier under the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (FAME-II) scheme. In March 2023, Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum were allocated Rs 800 crore to put up 7,432 charging stations at their retail outlets. To date, only 251 of the 4,523 stations installed are fully operational.

Moreover, during March 2024, sanction was given for 980 additional EV charging stations at a cost of Rs 73.5 crore, in addition to 400 stations that were allocated funding in various states. With this grant, it is hoped that a growing electric vehicle transition can be made more accessible to the public.

To improve convenience for long-distance EV drivers, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is expanding electric vehicle infrastructure by building charging stations within wayside amenities (WSAs). The NHAI’s proprietary National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML) has contracted out 458 projects to build 700 charging facilities to be integrated within the service area. Currently, 50 WSAs are operational, and 90 of the 150 remaining are expected to be completed within short timeframes.
